STATEMENT REGARDING JOHN GLENN’S PASSING

STATEMENT REGARDING JOHN GLENN’S PASSING

As I sit in hospital and just heard that my friend John Glenn has passed away, I feel fortunate to be recovering from my own illness, but saddened that we lost another space pioneer and world icon.

I first met John Glenn in 1953 when I was a fighter pilot in South Korea in the 16th squadron and the 51st fighter group. He was the Ops officer of the 25th squadron in the 51st fighter group. The next time I learned about him he flew of course on his first orbital flight and then when I reported as a NASA astronaut in 1963 and started training in 1964 we both became elders in the same church in Houston, TX.

Not long after that he left NASA and of course pursued a career in politics while I went on to do my Gemini 12 and Apollo 11 missions. When he was 77 he flew again on a shuttle mission and became the oldest to fly in space. I saw him at various memorials and astronaut gatherings over the years and I believe the last time we saw each other in person was at Neil Armstrong’s memorial at the National Cathedral although we spoke by phone and corresponded by email since then.

I was very saddened to hear the John was ill over the past year. Since he was the last remaining Mercury astronaut, I was always lobbying him to encourage the Apollo guys to do regular reunions annually since we’re not getting any younger. With the news today I’m saddened again to hear that we have lost the pioneer of space flight for the United States, second only to Yuri Gagarin, and he will always go down in history as certainly one of the most influential officers in the Marine Corps and of course as one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts. I am very sorry that he has departed us with his wisdom. I join that crowd of people and the entire nation and the world in paying homage to his service.

BUZZ ALDRIN

Saddened by yet another passing of a “space legend.” Buzz, you and the group of astronauts from the 1960s, are the true pioneers of space flight. Which is why there aren’t many astronauts after you, that were as well known. I can’t honestly look back and remember a single astronaut, except the teacher we lost while I sat in my 5th grade classroom, as the Space Shuttle Challenger mishap took place. You guys are the true heroes, and I’m glad to have been alive during a time when the pioneers of space walked this earth. God speed, get well, and good luck.

A real piece of America Mr. Glenn will always be.

To have had the honor of ever meeting Mr. Glenn would definitely be something I would check off on a personal Bucket List. (I’m am very fortunate to still possess the possibility of checking off Buzz Aldrin’s name on that same list.)

Buzz, it was a real example of respect for All the space pioneers, no matter which country they represented, to mention Yuri Gagarin in your tribute to Mr. Glenn. What a talented group of pioneers we benefit from, along with all the engineers that designed/built/managed our space programs.

Condolences to the Glenn family, and at the same time Congratulations on being the benefactors of such a relationship with such a man.

My Grandfather did a lot of work for the space program and some of the stories he told me you have to respect at a time when we weren’t sure if our rockets would even make it off the pad let alone orbit the Earth John Glenn had the balls er, courage if you want to be politically correct to sit on top of one and orbit our planet. It’s a sad day indeed.

I’m an avid follower of space exploration and consider the astronauts as my heroes. I have poured, through the years, over books, videos and the internet, savoring the history, pioneering exploits, and continous efforts in the advancement of space science. Knowledge of space is deeply meaningful to me. To John Glenn, farewell, much love and thanks, your names lives forever. To Buzz Aldrin, continuing adoration from this simple soul, may you recover back to top health and be a continuing inspiration, hopefully until man finally steps on Mars!!

The 50’s and 60’s were turbulent times. Men like you , John Glenn and all the men of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo were real heros during an unprecedented period of progress in space exploration. We are once again living in very uncertain times and I fear mankind has lost that pioneering spirit. We must look to the past for our heros. We lost one today. God speed John Glenn. Long live Buzz Aldrin! Get well soon.

Wonderful and admirable tribute to a friend and colleague. The respect and admiration is very apparent. I can think of no greater tribute to such a hero than to have a hero such as yourself deliver it. I am thankful that I have lived in the same time period as the 2 of you. I feel as though I could have a cup of coffee with either of you and we would talk of many adventures easily.
    Thank you Sir

It’s a lovely tribute to him. Glenn had been famous and in the news regularly for my entire life, and I was so used to him being around that I didn’t realize he was already 95. I had really appreciated the fact that we still had him around—and even several of you from the heroic era of space exploration. But with Glenn’s passing away, we’ve lost the last of the Mercury Seven, and it really is the end of an era.

I’m teaching my daughters a lot about the pioneering days of space flight, so that they grow up with an appreciation for it. Take care of yourself, Buzz. We want you around for many more years, too.

John Glenn was the statement of the type of American we all want to be… I grew up with a speech impediment and as a child, seeing that his wife had the same problem as me and how he stood by her for that issue, gave me hope that I could either live with it or learn to overcome it. It may sound corny that I picked up on that, but its true. The small things people do will echo far beyond what they will ever know in how it will impact a person.
